WHY SHOULD I RIDE A MOPED? (as opposed to a car, a scooter, a horse, a donkey, etc.)
This
is an important question
and we shall try to provide you with the necessary information here, so that
you can make
an informed decision.
Size: there are many myths regarding mopeds, most of which
are not true, or at least borderline misleading. While size matters in general
terms, bigger isn't necessarily better, when it comes to agility, performance,
stability and safety on the road.
Weather: just like any other open vehicle, mopeds are sensitive
to good weather and decent climate conditions. But it is not true that you can
only ride in hot Summer weather. Dress warm and you're OK, so long as there
are no 100 km wind gusts and the pavement is bare.
The money: there's no other motorised vehicle out there that could compete with a moped, when it comes to the cost of ownership, including the low initial investment, the cost of insurance, the maintenance requirements and before all, the money you'd spend on fuel.
City
traffic only: there's the issue whether a moped is for short city hops
only, or can be ridden out of town as well. This is a misconception: with the
exception of the big highways, like the 401, etc. all other roads, including
regional highways (Hwy 11,7,2, etc.) are fine.
