THE GALLERY OF MOPEDS PAST

There are still many of these wonderful pieces of engineering and ingenuity on the road and/or in basements, barns and in some cases living rooms (yes!). We saw quite a bundle going through our shop over the years to be salvaged and restored.

We structured the Gallery by brand name, in alphabetical order. It is by far not complete and we'd welcome any addition suggestion and/or contribution.

Agrati-Garelli (Italy) - a major manufacturer in the '70s, now gone; engines are still produced in India
AustroDaimler (Austria) premium brand introduced by Steyr as an upscale model
Batavus (Holland) - a well established Dutch racing bicycle maker,still in business
BSA (UK) model Ariel - weird little 3-wheeler, also a very bicycle-like attempt on a moped (1952)
Cimatti (Italy) Citybike
Columbia (assembled in the US) model Commuter, powered by Sachs
Demm (Italy) Smily
DKW (Germany) Hummel
Göricke (Germany) powered by Sachs, very popular brand in the '50s
Gritzner (Germany) model names like Brummi and Monza, who could resist?
Honda (Japan) PA-50 (2-stroke) - also a 4-stroke earlier in the '70s (PC50)
Husqvarna (Sweden) the first moped with telescopic front forks (no wonder Husky held the patent)
Indian (US, assembled in Taiwan) unqiue 4-stroke engine, large frame, motorcycle-like ride, created as the 'ultimate' moped by Indian, model names like 501 Chief
Jawa (Czechoslovakia) from the makers of Jawa and CZ motorcycles, one of the few mopeds that derived from big bikes and not from bicycles
JC Penney (powered by Puch, assembled in Austria by Kromag) models Pinto, Swinger
Kreidler (Germany) Flory, Florette, MP9, MP-19 (with turn signals) 2-speed automatic
Lambretta (Italy) Lambrettino 48
KTM (powered by Sachs, sometimes Puch engines, assembled in Austria) small, but feisty manufacturer of all kinds of 2-wheelers; after bankruptcy reinvented itself as a player in crossbikes and racers
Malaguti (Italy) Commuter
Malanca (Italy) Nichy
Miele(Germany) probably the best known German brand in everything, from dishwashers to vacuumcleaners and yes, mopeds too

Motom (Italy) Superelle, 4-stroke engine
NSU (Germany) Quickly
Peugeot (France) models 101, 102, 103, 104, TSA, TSM, GT-10, still going strong
Piaggio (Italy) one of the largest producer of everything on 2-wheels, including mopeds and scooters (Vespa)
Puch (Austria) ditto
Raleigh (UK) engine licensed by Motobecane
Rizzato (Italy) Califfo

Solex (originally made in France, now in Hungary) introduced in 1947, models 3800, 4600, 5000, Pli-Solex (folding bike) and 6000 (drive-shaf)
Torrot (Spain) model Turismo, engine under Peugeot licence
Zündapp (Germany) a legendary German motorcycle-maker, which also made some of the most beautiful mopeds, like the one in the picture - thanks to the more liberal licensing regimen in Germany at the time, a 'moped' could have pretty much everything - for all intents and purposes it was a genuine, just smaller motorcycle
